Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that focuses on improving and restoring physical function, mobility, and quality of life through assessment, treatment, and prevention of physical impairments, pain, and disabilities. Physiotherapists use various techniques such as manual therapy, dry needling, taping, cupping, and tailored exercise programs to treat musculoskeletal, neurological, sports-related, and cardiopulmonary conditions while promoting healing and overall wellness.
COMMON FAQ:
Physiotherapists are highly trained professionals who use their expertise in human anatomy and physiology to accurately identify and address the root causes of pain and discomfort, helping you move freely and without pain. Physiotherapy includes a wide range of interventions designed to target different parts of the body and manage various conditions. At Motion Health Rehab, our skilled team provides care across these key areas of physiotherapy:
Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy
This field focuses on the prevention, assessment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries, such as fractures, sprains, strains, overuse injuries, and post-surgical recovery.
Sports Physiotherapy
Athletes frequently encounter injuries or seek support to enhance their performance. A sports-focused physio works to prevent, diagnose, and treat sports-related injuries while optimizing athletic capabilities.
Neurological Physiotherapy
Neurological conditions, such as strokes, amputations, traumatic brain injuries, multiple sclerosis, and spinal cord injuries, often result in impaired movement and function. Neurological physiotherapy aims to improve mobility, balance, and coordination for individuals with these challenges.
Paediatric Physiotherapy
This branch addresses the unique needs of children and adolescents, focusing on developmental delays, congenital conditions, and paediatric sports injuries.
NDIS Physiotherapy
NDIS physiotherapy focuses on assisting people with disabilities through personalized treatment plans designed to improve their mobility, independence, and overall quality of life.
At Motion Health Rehab, we specialize in all musculoskeletal injuries, pre- and post-surgical rehabilitation, high-performance sports, neurological, paediatric and NDIS physiotherapy.

In Australia, you do not need a referral to see a physiotherapist in most cases. Physiotherapists in Australia first contact practitioners, meaning you can book an appointment and be treated without requiring a referral from a GP or specialist.
However, there are a few situations where a referral might be necessary:
- Private Health Insurance
● Most private health insurance policies do not require a referral to claim physiotherapy benefits. However,
it’s a good idea to check with your provider about their specific requirements. - WorkCover or Motor Vehicle Accident Insurance
● If your physiotherapy treatment is for a workplace injury or a motor vehicle accident, you may need a referral from your GP or the insurance company, depending on the insurer’s policy and your treatment plan. - NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme)
● If you’re eligible for NDIS support, you can access physiotherapy as part of your NDIS plan. A referral is generally not needed unless specifically required by your plan or provider. - Medicare (Chronic Disease Management)
● If you’re seeking physiotherapy through the Chronic Disease Management Plan (previously known as EPC Plan), you will need a referral from your GP. This allows for up to 5 sessions of physiotherapy funded by Medicare.
● Your GP will assess if physiotherapy is appropriate for your condition and write a referral for you.
In most general cases, you can book directly with a physiotherapist, and they can assess and treat your injury or condition accordingly. Please call us on 1800 417 799 if you have further questions.
Conditions We Treat
Conditions We Treat
- An ACL tear is a serious knee injury commonly seen in sports involving quick direction changes, like soccer, rugby, or basketball. Rehab typically involves physiotherapy to restore strength, flexibility, and function, sometimes followed by surgery and further rehab depending on the severity.
- Stress fractures are tiny cracks in bones caused by repetitive impact or overuse, often seen in weight-bearing bones like the tibia (shinbone) and metatarsals (foot bones). They are common in activities involving running and jumping.
- Known as lateral epicondylalgia, tennis elbow is an overuse injury causing pain and inflammation in the tendons of the forearm. It’s often associated with repetitive gripping motions, not just tennis. Physiotherapy for tennis elbow includes manual therapy, specific exercises, and may also involve rest, dry needling, and taping to reduce pain
- Hamstring strains involve the straining or tearing of muscles at the back of the thigh, often seen in sprinters or runners. These muscles are responsible for bending and straightening the knee. The injuries can result from sudden movements, overstretching, or muscle imbalances around the hamstring. Treatment typically includes rest, physiotherapy, and sometimes surgery for severe tears.
- Overuse injuries develop gradually from repetitive stress on a body part. Common examples include tennis elbow, runner's knee, and shin splints, typically treated by a sports injury physiotherapist.
- A concussion is a traumatic brain injury resulting from a blow to the head or violent shaking, causing symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, confusion, and memory problems. Concussions are common in high-contact sports like football. While physiotherapy is helpful for musculoskeletal rehabilitation following injuries, concussions typically require referral to doctors or neurosurgeons for comprehensive care.
