Treatment explained

What Is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses controlled acoustic waves to deliver a mechanical stimulus to a targeted area of the body. The waves are delivered through a treatment head and can stimulate responses within the tissues.

It has been used in physiotherapy and sports medicine for many years, particularly for persistent tendon and musculoskeletal conditions.

Assessment comes first

Shockwave therapy is not appropriate for every injury. Your physiotherapist will assess your condition and determine whether it is a suitable option for you.

Suitability

Could Shockwave Therapy Be Right for You?

If you have an injury that has been stubborn, persistent or has not settled as expected, shockwave therapy may be worth considering as part of your rehabilitation.

A Motion Health physiotherapist can assess your condition and determine whether it is appropriate for you. If it is not suitable, they can guide you toward another management approach.

Conditions

What Can Shockwave Therapy Be Used For?

It may be considered for selected persistent tendon and musculoskeletal conditions.

Plantar heel pain

Including plantar fasciitis.

Achilles tendinopathy

Persistent pain affecting the Achilles tendon.

Patellar tendinopathy

Often known as jumper's knee.

Tennis elbow

Persistent tendon pain around the elbow.

Shoulder pain

Selected rotator cuff-related conditions.

Calcific tendon conditions

For some clinically appropriate presentations.

For athletes, shockwave therapy may also be incorporated into a broader rehabilitation program when the goal is to return to training and competition.

How it works

How Does Shockwave Therapy Work?

The machine generates acoustic pressure waves that are delivered into the targeted area. These mechanical waves can influence the local tissue environment and stimulate biological responses. Shockwave therapy may also influence how the nervous system processes pain.

1

Targeted acoustic waves

Controlled pressure waves are directed into the area being treated.

2

Local tissue response

The mechanical stimulus may influence blood flow, cellular activity and tissue remodelling.

3

Progressive rehabilitation

Treatment is combined with a plan to progressively load the affected tissues.

Rehab to performance

More Than a Stand-Alone Treatment

The goal is not simply to “blast away” pain. At Motion Health, shockwave therapy is one tool inside an individual rehabilitation plan designed to move you from pain management toward strength, function and performance.

  • Assessment of the injury and contributing factors
  • Shockwave therapy when clinically appropriate
  • Progressive strengthening and loading
  • Activity modification and return-to-sport or normal activity planning
