Can physios help with my headaches?

If you’ve been struggling with headaches or migraines, it can feel like you’ve tried everything. Painkillers, heat packs, stretching, cutting out certain foods. For many people, the missing piece is actually the neck and the way the whole body supports it. This is where physiotherapy can make a big difference.

Why the neck matters

A large number of headaches come from irritated joints or muscles in the upper neck. These structures share pathways with the nerves that create headache pain. When they become tight, stiff or overloaded, they can trigger pain behind the eyes, at the base of the skull or across the forehead.

Sometimes the neck becomes sensitive because of posture, long hours sitting, stress or weakness in the muscles that help support the head. The good news is that all of these things can be improved.

How physiotherapists help

Your physio starts by figuring out what is actually driving your headaches. This might include checking the mobility of the upper neck, testing the strength and control of the deep neck flexors, or looking at how your shoulder blades and upper back move.

Hands-on treatment can settle the irritated joints and calm the surrounding muscles. This may include gentle joint techniques, soft tissue work or targeted releases. Many people feel their head lighten or their neck move more freely even after the first session.

But hands-on work is only the start. Lasting improvement comes from retraining the system. Your physio will guide you through exercises that strengthen the neck and upper back, improve your posture tolerance and help your body handle daily life without constantly flaring up.

Lifestyle changes that help

Small changes often make a big difference. Adjusting your desk setup, learning how to take movement breaks, improving sleep routines or reducing general muscle tension can all decrease headache frequency. Your physio can help you identify which habits are aggravating your symptoms and how to replace them with healthier ones.

How EPs and dietitians fit in

Exercise physiologists can help build a well rounded fitness routine that supports your neck and reduces stress levels. Regular strength and aerobic exercise has been shown to reduce the intensity and frequency of headaches.

Dietitians can help identify food patterns that might be contributing to migraines. They can also improve overall nutrition, which supports better energy, recovery and sleep. For some people, even small changes in hydration or meal timing can make a noticeable difference.
