Getting Ready for Your Vestibular Physio Assessment: A Patient’s Guide
If you’ve booked in for a vestibular physiotherapy assessment, first of all, well done! Taking this step means you’re on the road to figuring out what’s causing that dizziness, spinning, or wobbly feeling.
If you’re wondering, “What do I need to do to get ready?” don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here’s a simple guide on what to expect and how to prepare for your appointment at Motion Health Rehab.
What to Expect at Your First Visit
Your first session is all about understanding what’s going on and getting you started on the path to recovery. Here’s the general flow:
- A friendly chat (interview):
Your physio will ask lots of questions about your symptoms, when they started, what makes them better or worse, and your medical history. This helps us piece the puzzle together. - A detailed examination:
This may include watching your eye movements with special infra-red goggles. We might also check your balance and how your inner ear responds to movement. - Treatment on the spot:
Depending on what we find, your physio may begin treatment right away. This could include:- Repositioning manoeuvres (gentle guided head/body movements if you have BPPV)
- Tailored exercises to improve balance, reduce dizziness, or help your brain adapt
What to Wear
You don’t need to dress up as comfort is key! Wear clothes you can move easily in. For example:
- A T-shirt or top (avoid stiff collars, as your neck needs to move freely)
- Pants or shorts that allow easy movement
- Comfortable shoes you can safely walk in
What If I Feel Nauseous?
Some vestibular tests and treatments can bring on dizziness or nausea (that’s part of the process, we’re trying to bring out your symptoms to know what’s happening).
If you’re prone to nausea or vomiting, it can really help to:
- Take an anti-nausea medication prescribed by your GP about 30–60 minutes before your appointment
- Bring a bottle of water and maybe a light snack for afterwards
Other Handy Tips
- Bring a support person if you’re nervous or worried about unsteadiness after the session.
- Allow some extra time after your appointment in case you feel a bit wobbly before driving.
- Write down your symptoms or questions beforehand so you don’t forget anything important during your consult.
The Bottom Line
Coming in for a vestibular physiotherapy assessment can feel a little daunting, especially if you’re already feeling dizzy. But rest assured, our team at Motion Health Rehab will guide you through each step with care, patience, and (hopefully) a few smiles along the way.
With the right preparation, you’ll feel more confident and ready to start your recovery journey.
